Google invests $10B in Visakhapatnam data hub, India’s largest tech bet

Tech giant Google is set to invest $10 billion (around ₹8,730 crore) to build a massive data centre cluster in Visakhapatnam, marking its largest direct investment in India’s digital infrastructure, according to The Economic Times.

The 1 GW-capacity hub will span three campuses across Adavivaram and Tarluvada villages in Visakhapatnam district and Rambilli village in Anakapalli district. The facilities are expected to be operational by July 2028.

Project highlights

The investment will include:

  • Three high-capacity submarine cables

  • Dedicated cable landing stations

  • Metro fibre networks

  • Advanced telecommunications infrastructure

Once completed, the Visakhapatnam cluster is projected to become Asia’s largest data centre region.

Government approvals and agreements

Sources told the publication that formal agreements are expected to be finalised during a meeting between Google leadership and Andhra Pradesh IT & Electronics Minister Nara Lokesh in New Delhi on October 14.

The state’s Investment Promotion Board, chaired by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, is expected to approve the proposal imminently.

Strategic significance

This will be Google’s first large-scale data infrastructure investment in India. Globally, the company operates data centres in 11 countries, including the US, Japan, Singapore, Ireland, and Germany.

After returning to power, Naidu signed a memorandum of understanding with Google in December 2024, and Andhra Pradesh has since been actively positioning itself as a hub for data infrastructure. Proposed amendments to the IT Act and Copyright Act earlier this year aim to facilitate the creation of “data cities” in the state.

In May, a Google Asia-Pacific delegation, accompanied by Lokesh, visited Visakhapatnam to inspect potential sites for the project. The new hub will also form a key part of India’s first international AI Infrastructure Hub, an integrated digital ecosystem designed to boost advanced research, innovation, and economic growth.
