Houthis Attack Dutch Ship Minervagracht in Gulf of Aden; 2 Sailors Injured

Yemen's Houthi militants have claimed responsibility for an attack on the Dutch-flagged general cargo vessel Minervagracht in the Gulf of Aden on Wednesday, causing injuries and forcing an evacuation of the crew.

According to the EU maritime mission Aspides and the vessel's operator, the strike injured two sailors and necessitated a helicopter evacuation of the ship’s 19 crew members.

Details of the Attack

The Houthis’ military spokesperson confirmed that the attack on Monday was carried out using a cruise missile. The vessel, operated by Amsterdam-based Spliethoff, was in international waters in the Gulf of Aden when it was hit, resulting in significant damage and fire onboard.

The Iran-aligned group claimed the attack was in response to the ship’s owner violating what they described as “the entry ban to the ports of occupied Palestine.”

Context and History of Attacks

Since 2023, the Houthis have conducted multiple attacks on vessels in the Red Sea, targeting ships they link to Israel in solidarity with Palestinians over the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict.

  • September 2025: Attacked the Israeli-owned tanker Scarlet Ray near Yanbu, Saudi Arabia.

  • July 2025: Sank the Magic Seas bulk carrier and the Eternity C cargo ship in the Red Sea.

  • July 2024: Last major Houthi attack in the Gulf of Aden on the Singapore-flagged Lobivia container ship.

The Minervagracht incident marks the first Houthi strike on a commercial vessel since early September, highlighting ongoing maritime security risks in the Gulf of Aden and Red Sea regions.
