Jaish-e-Mohammed Forms First Women’s Unit Led by Masood Azhar’s Sister

After suffering a significant setback in India’s Operation Sindoor, which destroyed its headquarters at Markaz Subhanallah in Bahawalpur, Pakistan, Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) is reportedly reshaping its strategy. The terrorist group has announced the formation of its first women’s wing, Jamaat-ul-Mominaat, aimed at psychological warfare, recruitment, and propaganda.

According to sources, the unit will be led by Sadiya Azhar, the sister of JeM chief Masood Azhar. Her husband, Yusuf Azhar, was among Masood Azhar’s family members eliminated during the Operation Sindoor strikes on May 7.

Recruitment began in Bahawalpur on October 8 and reportedly targets wives of JeM members as well as economically disadvantaged women studying at the group’s centres in Bahawalpur, Karachi, Muzaffarabad, Kotli, Haripur, and Mansehra. The wing’s activities are reportedly spreading through social media, WhatsApp groups, and madrasas, with influence reaching Jammu & Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, and parts of southern India.

Traditionally, JeM had barred women from participating in armed operations, unlike ISIS, Boko Haram, Hamas, and LTTE, which have previously deployed female attackers. Sources indicate that the decision to integrate women into JeM operations was jointly approved by Masood Azhar and his brother Talha al-Saif, reflecting a strategic shift after India’s military response.

The creation of Jamaat-ul-Mominaat signals a new phase in JeM’s operational tactics, emphasizing propaganda, recruitment, and expanding its influence among women for ground-level and digital outreach.
