Kerala Reports Two More Deaths from Brain-Eating Amoeba; Toll Reaches Three in August

Two individuals, including a three-month-old infant, have died from amoebic meningoencephalitis, a rare and often fatal brain infection caused by a brain-eating amoeba, at the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital. With these fatalities, the death toll in Kerala for August has climbed to three, while eight others remain under treatment, health officials confirmed on Monday.

The infant, son of Abubacker Siddique from Omassery in Kozhikode, had been undergoing treatment for nearly a month before his condition worsened on Sunday. The second victim, 52-year-old Ramla from Kappil in Malappuram district, developed symptoms on July 8 and was initially treated at a private hospital before being shifted to Kozhikode Medical College.

Earlier on August 14, a nine-year-old girl from Thamarassery succumbed to the same infection at the same facility.

Current Situation & Health Measures

Health authorities report that eight patients from Kozhikode, Malappuram, and Wayanad are currently receiving treatment. So far, 42 cases have been recorded in Kerala this year.

Amoebic meningoencephalitis is primarily contracted by swimming or bathing in contaminated water. In response, the Health Department has launched preventive measures, including:

  • Chlorination of wells and water tanks in Kozhikode, Wayanad, and Malappuram.

  • Awareness campaigns urging the public to avoid stagnant water sources.

Officials are urging residents to maintain water hygiene and avoid unchlorinated water bodies to reduce the risk of infection.
