Nirmala Sitharaman Alleges Tamil Leader Was Denied PM Post

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Sunday alleged that veteran Tamil politician and Tamil Maanila Congress founder GK Moopanar was denied the opportunity to become Prime Minister, calling it the “biggest betrayal” to Tamil Nadu.

Speaking at Moopanar’s memorial event in Teynampet, Sitharaman suggested that political forces that frequently invoke Tamil pride were responsible for blocking his elevation to the top post.

We all know who stopped him from becoming Prime Minister. Those who repeatedly speak about Tamil culture and Tamil pride did not support a Tamilian for the PM’s chair. This, I believe, was the biggest betrayal to Tamil Nadu,” Sitharaman said, without directly naming the DMK.

Moopanar Praised as a National Leader

The Union Minister hailed Moopanar as a “simple, honest and true nationalist”, respected across India.
“He was not just a Tamil leader; he was known in Bihar, Haryana, and across the country,” she said.

Sitharaman, along with AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami, DMDK Treasurer Sudheesh, BJP leaders K Annamalai and Nainar Nagenthiran, and others, paid floral tributes at the memorial.

Call for NDA Unity in Tamil Nadu

The Finance Minister also urged the NDA alliance partners in Tamil Nadu to remain united ahead of upcoming electoral challenges.
“Let us work for the people through this alliance without worrying about minor issues. We have mature and experienced leaders who work with conviction and discipline. Let us stay united,” she said.
