Madagascar Coup Leader Colonel Michael Randrianirina Sworn in as President

Colonel Michael Randrianirina was sworn in as Madagascar’s president on Friday, following a dramatic youth-led uprising that ousted former leader Andry Rajoelina. The ceremony at the High Constitutional Court included trumpets, raised swords, and cheering crowds, reflecting both celebration and uncertainty.

The coup came after weeks of protests by young citizens over power and water shortages. While many celebrated Rajoelina’s removal, protesters remain cautious about military consolidation.

Randrianirina, a CAPSAT army commander, pledged to uphold national unity and human rights, announcing a military-led transitional government for up to two years before new elections. He played a key role in the unrest by protecting demonstrators and urging soldiers not to fire.

The takeover has drawn international condemnation from the African Union and UN Secretary-General António Guterres, amid concerns of Madagascar’s recurring political instability.

Madagascar faces structural challenges, including extreme poverty, a young population, and high living costs, despite being a major exporter of vanilla, nickel, and sapphires.
