Trump to Meet Xi in Two Weeks; 100% China Tariffs “Unsustainable”

US President Donald Trump confirmed on Friday that he will meet Chinese President Xi Jinping in two weeks, signaling a potential thaw in US-China trade relations. Trump acknowledged that the previously announced 100% tariff on Chinese imports would not be sustainable long-term, adding, “They forced me to do that.”

The announcement follows a week of volatile exchanges. Trump had accused Beijing of trying to “hold the world captive” via new export controls on rare earth minerals, critical for EVs, semiconductors, and defense systems. China condemned the tariffs as “arbitrary double standards” and warned of countermeasures.

While Trump emphasized that he expects things to “be fine with China,” the administration has continued implementing trade restrictions, including new software export controls from November 1. Vice President JD Vance urged Beijing to act reasonably while defending American interests.

The upcoming meeting could serve as a critical platform for both nations to reset trade discussions, following heightened rhetoric and economic friction over tariffs and export controls.
