Mahatma Gandhi Statue Vandalised in London, India Condemns Desecration

A statue of Mahatma Gandhi at Tavistock Square in London was vandalised, with graffiti discovered on the plinth of the iconic monument depicting the Father of the Nation in a meditative pose. The incident occurred just days before the annual Gandhi Jayanti celebrations scheduled for October 2.

The High Commission of India has strongly condemned the act, describing it as a “violent desecration” of the revered monument. The Indian Mission has reported the incident to local authorities and is actively coordinating efforts to restore the statue.

Gandhi Jayanti, observed every year on October 2, commemorates the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and is marked with tributes to his philosophy of peace and non-violence. Authorities in London are expected to increase security around the monument to prevent further incidents ahead of the celebrations.

India’s diplomatic mission reiterated its commitment to ensuring that the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi is preserved and that the monument is restored promptly.
