US Deports 100 Iranians in Rare Coordination with Tehran Amid Immigration Crackdown

The United States has deported approximately 100 Iranian nationals in a rare instance of direct cooperation with Tehran, marking a significant development amid the Trump administration’s expanding immigration crackdown, according to the New York Times.

A US-chartered flight carrying the deportees departed from Louisiana on Monday and was scheduled to arrive in Iran via Qatar on Tuesday. The move follows months of diplomatic negotiations between Washington and Tehran, highlighting an unexpected alignment despite recent tensions, including US strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities.

Iranian officials confirmed that the deportees included men and women, with some traveling as couples. The identities and reasons for their attempted entry into the US were not disclosed. While a portion of the individuals had volunteered for deportation after extended stays in detention centers, others were sent against their will. In most cases, asylum applications had either been rejected or were pending before US immigration courts.

Historically, previous US administrations have offered sanctuary to Iranians fleeing political and religious persecution. However, in recent years, the number of Iranians crossing the southern US border illegally has risen, with many citing fears of repression in their home country.

The Trump administration has emphasized that its stringent immigration measures aim to remove dangerous criminals. President Trump has repeatedly vowed to deport what he calls “the worst of the worst,” attributing crime, drug trafficking, and other societal issues to illegal immigration.

This coordinated deportation, while unusual, underscores the US government’s firm approach to immigration enforcement, as well as a rare moment of cooperation with Iran despite ongoing geopolitical frictions.
