Manchester United Manager Ruben Amorim Expresses Mixed Emotions After Grimsby Defeat

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim delivered an emotional press conference ahead of his team’s Premier League fixture against Burnley, reflecting on the shock EFL Cup loss to Grimsby Town that eliminated the Red Devils from the competition.

Amorim did not shy away from his feelings, describing a spectrum of emotions toward his squad. “To be really honest, every time we have a defeat like that, I’m going to be like that. Sometimes I hate my players, sometimes I love them, sometimes I want to defend them. This is my way, and I’m going to be like that,” he said.

Despite advice from senior figures to moderate his responses, Amorim insisted that his passion for the game drives his candid approach. “Sometimes I want to quit, sometimes I want to be here for 20 years,” he added.

Reflecting on United’s recent form, Amorim expressed surprise at the dip in performance after a promising pre-season. “We were playing better, being consistent. Then we had that kind of performance, and I was really disappointed. But now it’s a new game and I’m focused on the next one.”

Considering His Future

Amorim admitted that he briefly questioned his future immediately after the Grimsby defeat. “After the Grimsby game, I felt maybe somebody else should take my place. But I don’t feel that now. The hardest part of defeat is not always the result, it’s the way we lose — not fighting for the ball or running enough.”

Transfer Speculation

When questioned about transfer rumours, Amorim remained tight-lipped. Speculation had suggested Alejandro Garnacho could be sold and midfielder Kobbie Mainoo might go out on loan. Amorim dismissed the rumours, emphasizing that Mainoo remains part of his plans. “He needs to fight for his place, and we need him,” he stated.

With focus now shifting to the Burnley fixture, Amorim appears determined to channel his frustration into improving Manchester United’s performances.
