MCG Converts from AFL Ground to Cricket Venue Ahead of India’s Tour of Australia
The Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) is undergoing a remarkable transformation as it prepares to host India for their upcoming white-ball series in Australia. Following the conclusion of the Australian Football League (AFL) season, the ground staff are installing drop-in cricket pitches to ensure top-quality playing conditions for the summer.
A Stadium for All Seasons
The MCG is one of the most versatile stadiums in the world, hosting everything from international cricket and AFL matches to rugby, football, and even concerts. While the stadium serves as the spiritual home of Australian Rules Football during winter, it seamlessly transitions to cricket in the summer months.
Ground staff remove AFL goalposts and install portable cricket wickets, cultivated off-site at a nearby nursery in Port Melbourne. The field is re-marked with cricket boundary lines, sight screens are added, and grandstands are adjusted for spectators, ensuring a world-class experience for cricket fans.
India Tour and Cricket Highlights
Australia will host India in a packed white-ball series, followed by the Ashes against England and the Big Bash League. Several matches have already sold out in advance, highlighting the popularity of cricket at the MCG.
