Mirabai Chanu Wins Silver at World Weightlifting Championships 2025

Mirabai Chanu returned to the World Weightlifting Championships podium after three years, claiming silver in the women's 48kg category at Forde, Norway. Her 199kg total (84kg snatch, 115kg clean and jerk) marked her third career medal at the event and ended India’s medal drought at the World Championships since 2022.

North Korea’s Ri Song Gum dominated with a world record total of 213kg (91kg snatch, 122kg clean and jerk), securing gold, while Thailand’s Thanyathon Sukcharoen took bronze with 198kg.

Chanu started with a successful 84kg snatch but missed her next two attempts at 87kg. She bounced back in the clean and jerk with lifts of 109kg, 112kg, and a final 115kg, matching her Tokyo Olympics best and securing silver in both the clean and jerk and overall total.

This championship marked Chanu’s first world appearance since the 2022 edition and her second international event after finishing fourth at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Her career highlights include gold at Anaheim 2017 (48kg, 194kg total) and silver at Bogota 2022 (200kg total).

Earlier this year, she also won gold at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships 2025 in Ahmedabad, lifting 193kg, securing direct qualification for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Chief coach Vijay Sharma emphasized that Chanu’s goal for Forde was to exceed the 200kg mark, demonstrating her commitment to returning to peak form.
