Nalanda Engineering College Protests Erupt After Female Student Dies in Fall

Chaos erupted at Nalanda College of Engineering in Chandi, Bihar, on Wednesday after a tragic incident led to the death of a female student, Sonam Kumari. She reportedly fell from a rooftop, dying instantly under circumstances that remain unclear. While some students suggested she was under stress after scoring low marks, her family has reportedly denied these claims.

Following the incident, students accused Principal Gopalanandan of negligence, alleging he refused to arrange a college vehicle to transport the injured student to a hospital, claiming it would “get dirty.” Students argue that timely medical attention could have saved Sonam’s life.

News of the tragedy triggered unrest at Chandi Referral Hospital, where hundreds of students gathered overnight. Protesters clashed with police, smashed the windows of a senior official’s vehicle, and set a scooter on fire. Authorities struggled to control the situation, and police reportedly used batons to disperse the crowd while attempting to prevent journalists from filming the chaos.

Students are demanding strict action against the principal, holding him responsible for what they believe was a preventable death. Police personnel from across Nalanda district were deployed to restore order, with efforts continuing into the early hours of Thursday.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage, highlighting concerns over student safety and administrative accountability in colleges across the region.
