Netanyahu Signals Gaza Ceasefire Talks with Trump as Death Toll Surpasses 66,000

On the eve of a White House meeting with President Donald Trump, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu indicated that Israel is working with the United States on a potential ceasefire plan in Gaza, though he stressed that details are still under negotiation.

“We’re working on it,” Netanyahu told Fox News on Sunday. “It’s not been finalized yet, but we’re working with President Trump’s team as we speak, and I hope we can make it a go.”

The announcement comes amid mounting global pressure for an end to the conflict in Gaza, where the Hamas-run health ministry reports over 66,000 deaths. Roughly half of the casualties are women and children, according to UN and independent monitors.

Arab officials familiar with the draft plan say it contains 21 points, including an immediate ceasefire, the release of all hostages within 48 hours, and a phased withdrawal of Israeli forces. The proposal has been circulated among regional leaders at the UN General Assembly, while Hamas has been briefed informally and expressed willingness to consider the plan responsibly.

Netanyahu, however, continues to insist that Israel will fight until Hamas is eliminated. He reiterated a conditional offer allowing Hamas fighters to leave Gaza if they end hostilities and release all hostages.

The conflict has drawn international condemnation. European governments are considering sanctions, several nations have recognized a Palestinian state, and cultural and sports boycotts are increasing. Even Trump, traditionally a staunch supporter of Israel, has shown signs of frustration after Israeli strikes on Hamas offices in Doha earlier this month.

Despite ongoing negotiations, the fighting continues. Gaza City residents reported nonstop explosions, and hospitals confirmed casualties at the Nuseirat refugee camp. Israel said it targeted 140 Hamas sites over the past 24 hours and demolished the 16-story Macca Tower, previously used for military purposes.

Nearly 90% of Gaza’s population has been displaced, and humanitarian experts warn of famine conditions in parts of Gaza City. The situation remains critical as diplomatic efforts continue.
