NIA Files Chargesheet Against Five Maoist Operatives for Killing Army Jawan

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has filed a supplementary chargesheet against five alleged Maoist operatives for their involvement in the killing of an Army jawan in Chhattisgarh’s Kanker district in 2023.

The chargesheet, submitted before the NIA Special Court in Jagdalpur, names Bhawan Lal Jain, Suresh Kumar Salam, Shailendra Kumar Baghel, Anduram Salam, and Sonu Hemla under provisions of the Indian Penal Code, the Arms Act, and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

The case pertains to the killing of Army jawan Motiram Achala, who was shot dead by armed Maoists at a village fair in Amabeda in February 2023 while on leave.

According to the NIA, four of the accused functioned as sleeper cells of the CPI (Maoist), while Hemla was associated with the Kuyemari Area Committee under the North Bastar Division. The operatives, along with a senior Maoist leader, allegedly identified the soldier and carried out the attack in a crowded marketplace to create fear among locals.

The five accused were arrested in March 2024. Earlier, in June, the NIA had chargesheeted another accused, Ashu Korsa, after taking over the investigation from the local police in February.

The agency said that further investigation into the larger conspiracy is continuing.
