NMC Approves 10,650 New MBBS Seats and 3,500 PG Proposals for 2025–26

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has given the green light to 10,650 additional MBBS seats and 41 new medical colleges across India for the 2025–26 academic session, marking one of the largest expansions in recent years.

This development aligns with the Union Government’s plan to add 75,000 new medical seats over five years, as announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his 2024 Independence Day address. With the latest approvals, India’s total MBBS capacity will increase from 1,17,750 seats in 2024–25 to 1,37,600 seats in 2025–26.

Alongside undergraduate courses, the NMC has received proposals for 3,500 new and renewed postgraduate (PG) seats, which will take the total PG capacity to nearly 67,000 seats. Overall, India’s medical education capacity has grown by approximately 15,000 seats at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels this year.

State-Wise Expansion Highlights

  • West Bengal: 150 new MBBS seats

  • Uttar Pradesh: 100 seats

  • Tamil Nadu & Rajasthan: 50 seats each

  • Jammu & Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh: 50 seats each

  • Jharkhand: 100 seats

Several other states have also secured approvals for new medical colleges and seat increases, ensuring broader access to medical education and healthcare services nationwide.

Meanwhile, Round 3 seat allotment for NEET UG 2025 was completed on October 18, with admissions reporting now underway. For postgraduate courses, NEET PG 2025 counselling began on October 18, and the full schedule will be released soon.

This large-scale expansion represents a major step toward bridging India’s doctor-patient ratio gap, improving healthcare accessibility, and strengthening the medical education infrastructure across the country.
