Obama Says 80% of World’s Problems Caused by Old Men, Takes a Jab at Trump

Former US President Barack Obama on Friday remarked that 80 percent of the world’s problems involve “old men hanging on,” drawing widespread attention for what was seen as a pointed dig at 77-year-old President Donald Trump. Speaking to British historian David Olusoga in London, Obama said ageing leaders often cling to power, build legacies, and put their names on everything, including metaphorical “pyramids.”

Obama, 64, emphasised that leaders must remember they are in office to serve a purpose, not to satisfy personal ego or hold power indefinitely. His comments come amid criticism of Trump, particularly regarding extraordinary measures such as deploying National Guard troops in Washington, DC, and controversial statements on public health.

In the same session, Obama also criticised Trump over his claims linking the painkiller Tylenol (paracetamol) to autism in infants, calling such statements “violence against the truth.” He highlighted the risks posed by spreading misinformation to public health and parental decision-making.

Obama framed his remarks within a broader reflection on the “tug of war” in America between progressive visions of inclusive democracy and populist pushes to return to a hierarchical, conservative worldview. While he acknowledged complacency among past progressives, he stressed the need for tested values to guide leadership in the contemporary era.

The former president’s comments have drawn attention as a rare and pointed critique of his successor, reflecting ongoing political and ideological divides in the United States.
