Pakistan PM Sharif, Army Chief Munir Hold Historic Talks with Trump at White House

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met US President Donald Trump at the White House on Thursday, marking his first Oval Office visit. Accompanying him was Pakistan’s powerful Army Chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, highlighting the growing importance of military-diplomatic ties in US-Pakistan relations.

Trump welcomed the Pakistani leaders warmly, calling both Sharif and Munir “great leaders.” The closed-door meeting focused on a broad agenda, including bilateral relations, trade, regional security, and global challenges. Sharif’s visit came on the heels of a joint meeting with leaders from eight Arab and Muslim nations at the UN General Assembly, aimed at addressing the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza.

This visit underscores the warming relationship between Washington and Islamabad, following a period of strained interactions. Earlier in June, Trump hosted Munir at the White House, and Pakistan subsequently endorsed Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize for his role in mediating a ceasefire between India and Pakistan.

Relations with the US contrast with recent tensions with India, as Trump imposed tariffs on Indian goods amid growing purchases of Russian oil. Meanwhile, Pakistan and the US signed a trade deal in July to develop Pakistan’s oil reserves and reduce tariffs on Pakistani exports.

The Sharif-Trump meeting highlights the strategic recalibration in South Asia, reflecting both economic and security priorities, and marks a significant step in deepening US-Pakistan ties.
