Pat Cummins could miss 2025 Ashes series; Steve Smith to captain Australia

Cricket Australia has been hit by a major setback ahead of the 2025 Ashes, with captain Pat Cummins ruled out of the opening Test in Perth and now facing the possibility of missing the entire five-match series against England.

Fresh scans last week revealed that Cummins’ back stress injury has not healed sufficiently for him to resume bowling. While the 32-year-old remained hopeful about participating, the medical update effectively rules him out of the first Test, scheduled to begin on November 21.

Steve Smith likely to step in as captain

With Cummins sidelined, Steve Smith is expected to assume the role of stand-in captain against Ben Stokes’ England side. Cricket Australia has declined to comment on the fast bowler’s condition, leaving uncertainty over whether he might return later in the series. At best, Cummins could feature in the final weeks, but that remains speculative.

Impact on Australia’s bowling attack

Cummins’ absence not only removes a leading strike bowler but also necessitates adjustments in Australia’s bowling lineup. Scott Boland is set to partner Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc as the third seamer in Perth, filling the gap left by the team’s premier fast bowler.

The loss of Cummins is a significant blow as Australia aims to retain the Ashes urn, which they have held since 2018. England, who have not won a Test in Australia since 2011, could take encouragement from the prospect of missing one of the world’s top pacers.

Cummins reflects on injury and Ashes hopes

Cummins’ injury comes after an intense period across formats. In a recent interview, he expressed disappointment but remained focused on recovery. “That would be devastating,” he said. “We’ll be doing everything we can to be right for that… it’s a big Ashes series — it doesn’t get much bigger — so you’re willing to be aggressive and take a few risks to try to play as much of the Tests as you can.”

The 2025 Ashes series begins on Friday, November 21, with the New Year’s Test scheduled to start on January 8. Australia will hope for Cummins’ recovery, but preparations continue with Steve Smith leading in his absence.
