Ravichandran Ashwin Set to Join Sydney Thunder for 2025-26 Big Bash League

Ravichandran Ashwin Set to Join Sydney Thunder for 2025-26 Big Bash League

Former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is reportedly set to make his debut in the Big Bash League (BBL), with Sydney Thunder closing in on his signing. If confirmed, Ashwin will become the first major Indian male cricketer to feature in Australia’s premier T20 franchise tournament.

According to Code Sports, Ashwin is expected to join the Thunder after fulfilling his commitments in the UAE-based ILT20, where he is already registered for the auction. The Sydney side, which includes stars like David Warner and rising batter Sam Konstas, will gain valuable experience in their spin department with Ashwin’s arrival.

Earlier this year, Ashwin retired from international cricket and all domestic competitions in India, including the IPL, opening doors for overseas franchise opportunities. Over his illustrious career, the 38-year-old spinner has taken over 700 wickets across formats, establishing himself as one of modern cricket’s finest off-spinners.

The addition of Ashwin comes as Sydney Thunder look to bounce back from a disappointing 2024-25 BBL season, where they finished last with just one win in ten matches. Warner was the team’s leading scorer with 405 runs, while Chris Green topped the bowling with 12 wickets. Ashwin’s inclusion is expected to bring balance, tactical acumen, and star power to the Thunder as they aim for a strong 2025-26 campaign and their second BBL title since 2015-16.

Ashwin’s BBL debut is seen as a landmark moment, not just for the Sydney Thunder but also for Indian cricket, signaling the gradual opening of opportunities for retired Indian players to participate in overseas franchise leagues.
