RG Kar Rape-Murder Convict’s Niece Found Hanging in Kolkata

Kolkata has been rocked by another tragic development connected to the infamous RG Kar hospital case. The 11-year-old niece of Sanjay Roy, the convict sentenced for raping and murdering a postgraduate trainee at RG Kar Medical College, was found hanging at her residence on Sunday. Authorities have registered a case of unnatural death and are investigating the circumstances surrounding this shocking incident.

Police sources revealed that it appeared to be a case of “partial hanging,” as part of the girl’s legs were touching the ground. She was alone at home when the incident occurred, and her family discovered her after returning from the market. Repeated calls went unanswered, prompting the family to break down the door to her room, only to find the girl hanging from a structure attached to the wardrobe.

The body was immediately sent to SSKM Hospital for a postmortem examination. Preliminary findings confirmed that the death was antemortem and caused by hanging. The Alipore police have started questioning family members and neighbors to determine whether depression, mental health issues, or other factors contributed to the tragedy.

This incident has heightened fear and anxiety in Kolkata, especially among residents familiar with the RG Kar hospital case. The original case involved Sanjay Roy, a former civic volunteer with Kolkata Police, who was sentenced to life imprisonment last year for the rape and murder of a 26-year-old trainee inside the hospital premises. The brutality of that crime had previously triggered nationwide outrage and protests by healthcare workers demanding stronger safety measures in hospitals.

Authorities are stressing the importance of community vigilance and mental health support, while continuing the investigation to rule out foul play. The incident has reignited discussions about the safety of women and children in residential and institutional environments, particularly when connected to high-profile criminal cases.

As the city mourns this tragic loss, officials are urging citizens to remain cautious and report any suspicious activity, emphasizing the need for both preventive measures and timely psychological support for vulnerable family members.
