Northeast Monsoon Hits Tamil Nadu: Heavy Rain, Red Alert Issued

Tamil Nadu is witnessing intense rainfall as the northeast monsoon sweeps across the state, causing flooding in several districts, including Chennai. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Ramanathapuram recorded 149 mm of rain, Nagapattinam 90 mm, and parts of Chennai 63.5 mm on Tuesday. While most areas received under 50 mm, isolated regions are facing heavy to very heavy rainfall, prompting red alerts from authorities.

Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin inspected critical infrastructure works in south Chennai to manage floodwaters effectively. These projects include deepening and widening canals, constructing covered concrete channels, installing stormwater drains, and desilting estuarine areas. Notably, the Okkiam Madhavi canal is undergoing renovation at a cost of Rs 27 crore, while desilting works continue in Kannagi Nagar to improve water flow during the monsoon season.

Farmers in Tirunelveli are bearing the brunt of relentless rains, with thousands of acres of paddy crops affected. Overlapping southwest and northeast monsoons have left little time for harvesting, and some collected rice remains unprocured. Subramaniam, a farmer from Kakanallur village, urged the government to implement doorstep procurement to prevent crop losses. Villages like Mannarkoil, Ayan, Thiruvaalieswaram, Kakanallur, Vaigaikulam, and Bramadesam are particularly impacted.

Following a review meeting with Chief Minister MK Stalin, Udhayanidhi Stalin emphasized coordination and readiness for public safety, crop and livestock protection, water monitoring, and rescue operations. Temporary camps for food and drinking water are being set up to mitigate the monsoon's impact.

Former Chief Minister Edapadi K Palanisamy warned that a low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal could further intensify rainfall in northern coastal districts, including Chennai and delta regions. For October 22, extremely heavy rain is predicted in Mayiladuthurai, Puducherry, Cuddalore, Villupuram, and Chengalpattu, while heavy rainfall is expected in Chennai, Thiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Thanjavur, Nagapattinam, Ariyalur, Thiruvarur, and Karaikal.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, urging citizens to stay alert, follow safety advisories, and avoid low-lying areas. With proactive infrastructure measures and coordinated response plans, the Tamil Nadu government aims to reduce flooding impact and safeguard lives and property during this challenging monsoon season.
