Bollywood superstar Salman Khan recently spoke about his long battle with trigeminal neuralgia, a severe chronic nerve disorder that causes excruciating facial pain. Sharing his experience on Kajol and Twinkle Khanna’s talk show ‘Two Much’, Khan revealed how the condition affected his daily life for over seven years.
Referred to as the ‘suicidal disease’, trigeminal neuralgia made even simple tasks like eating a challenge for Khan. He recalled that during the 2007 film ‘Partner’, the first symptoms appeared when Lara Dutta moved a strand of hair from his face. “Wow Lara, you’re electrifying!” Khan joked, highlighting the sudden onset of sharp pain. Initially mistaken for a dental issue, the problem was later identified as nerve-related.
Describing the severity, Khan said, “It is the worst pain… The highest number of suicides happen because of this condition. I had it for seven and a half years.” He detailed how his daily meals became torturous, taking up to an hour and a half to finish breakfast. “For an omelette, I couldn’t chew. I had to force myself and endure the pain just to eat,” he added.
After years of suffering, Khan underwent gamma knife surgery, an eight-hour procedure that provided significant relief. He explained, “They fix screws on your face for 7-8 hours… The procedure worked, and now the pain is gone, though an arteriovenous malformation remains.”
Khan emphasized raising awareness about trigeminal neuralgia. “It would take me an hour to finish my breakfast… it’s also called the suicidal disease,” he said, urging the public to understand the seriousness of the condition and offering hope to those living with similar challenges.
Despite these health struggles, Salman Khan continues his acting career and is currently filming ‘Battle of Galwan’. His appearance on ‘Two Much’ on Prime Video provided fans an intimate look at the personal battles behind the superstar’s public persona.
