Shaniwarwada Controversy: BJP MP Medha Kulkarni Sparks Political Firestorm

Pune has witnessed a political uproar following the Shaniwarwada controversy, centered around BJP Rajya Sabha MP Medha Kulkarni’s actions at the historic fort. The row erupted after a video surfaced showing women offering Namaz at the ASI-protected monument, prompting Kulkarni to lead a “purification” ritual on the site.

Kulkarni defended her actions, stating, “If someone says that we should come to a place again and again and start using it and later declare it as Vakth by user, then we will take action on such things.” However, her statement has drawn sharp criticism from political rivals and allies alike.

The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), a coalition partner in Maharashtra, accused Kulkarni of disturbing communal harmony and acting without consultation. Opposition leaders, including Abu Azmi and Waris Pathan of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), condemned the BJP MP’s actions, calling them provocative and a threat to social cohesion.

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), responsible for maintaining Shaniwarwada as a protected monument, has filed a complaint against the women who offered Namaz, while police have been deployed to prevent escalation. No formal offence has been registered against Kulkarni, but the incident has ignited heated debates across social media and local political circles.

Shaniwarwada, a historic fort in Pune, attracts thousands of visitors and serves as a symbol of Maratha heritage. Experts warn that such incidents can damage the monument’s cultural significance and lead to unnecessary communal tension. Several civil society groups have urged for peaceful resolution, emphasizing that the site should be respected as a heritage property while allowing freedom of worship in designated spaces.

Political analysts note that the controversy comes ahead of key local elections in Maharashtra, making it a high-stakes issue for parties attempting to consolidate voter bases along communal lines. The BJP’s handling of the situation, especially Kulkarni’s defense of her actions, will likely shape public perception and influence party dynamics in Pune.

As the Shaniwarwada controversy continues, authorities have called for calm, urging all parties to respect historical monuments, maintain public order, and uphold communal harmony. Citizens are also advised to follow updates and avoid gatherings that could escalate tensions.
