Shubman Gill Named India ODI Captain: Rahul Dravid’s Early Backing Pays Off

Shubman Gill has officially been named India’s ODI captain, taking over from Rohit Sharma as part of a generational transition. The 25-year-old will also continue to lead India in Tests, while serving as deputy to Suryakumar Yadav in T20Is.

Gill’s leadership rise has been closely monitored by head coach Gautam Gambhir, but it was Rahul Dravid who first identified his potential back in 2020-21. Former fast bowler RP Singh revealed in a recent conversation with Sony Sports that Dravid had predicted Gill would one day become India’s all-format captain, even before the batter cemented his place across all three formats.

“Dravid said, ‘One day, he will become unstoppable. He will captain India and serve for a long time,’” Singh shared, recalling their discussion about future Indian captains.

Gill first showcased his leadership skills during the 2018 U19 World Cup, where he was India’s leading run-scorer under coach Dravid. He debuted in ODIs in 2019, made his Test debut in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, and entered the T20I squad in 2023.

Following the retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from Tests in mid-IPL 2025, Gill was appointed Test captain, leading India to a 2-2 draw in England and scoring over 700 runs in the series. His success in England played a pivotal role in the BCCI’s decision to entrust him with ODI captaincy.

India’s upcoming ODI series against Australia begins in Perth on October 19, with Gill captaining the side for the first time. Prior to that, he will also lead India in the second Test against Australia in Delhi, starting October 10.

Ajit Agarkar, chairman of selectors, highlighted Gill’s prior experience as vice-captain in ODIs and praised his leadership skills displayed during the England Test series as a key factor for this decision.

Shubman Gill’s elevation reflects India’s long-term succession planning, ensuring continuity in leadership across all formats as the team looks ahead to future ICC tournaments.
