Shubman Gill ODI captain: Panesar hails India’s bold move

Former England spinner Monty Panesar has lauded Shubman Gill’s appointment as India’s ODI captain, calling the 26-year-old opener a “natural leader” who thrives under responsibility. Panesar added he wouldn’t be surprised if Gill were eventually handed the T20I captaincy as well.

The BCCI revealed that Ajit Agarkar personally informed Rohit Sharma of the decision to relieve him of the ODI captaincy, paving the way for Gill to take over. His first assignment is set against Australia in three ODIs starting October 19, 2025.

Panesar said, “When you give him responsibility, you see the best of Shubman Gill. He has done really well and can thrive under guidance from Rohit Sharma.”

Gill, focused on the future, is already eyeing the 2027 ODI World Cup. “It is the biggest honour to lead your country in ODIs. We have about 20 ODIs before the World Cup, and the ultimate goal is the trophy in South Africa,” he said.

This leadership transition signals a generational shift in Indian cricket, pairing Gill’s fresh energy with Rohit Sharma’s experience and mentorship.
