Sophie Devine Optimistic About NZ World Cup Comeback

New Zealand captain Sophie Devine expressed optimism after the White Ferns’ first win in the ongoing Women’s World Cup 2025, believing the team can stage a strong comeback.

After a 100-run victory over Bangladesh in Guwahati on October 10, New Zealand climbed to fifth place in the points table, having faced defeats against Australia and South Africa earlier in the tournament.

“Really pleasing for the side to open our account after a couple of frustrating games. We were good against Australia in certain phases but lost our way against South Africa,” Devine said.

Reflecting on South Africa’s dramatic win over India, Devine emphasized that “anything can happen in this tournament.”

Strong Performances and Partnerships

Devine, who has scored 63, 85, and 112 in the tournament so far, formed a crucial 112-run partnership with Brooke Halliday, helping NZ recover from 38/3 to post 227/9. The bowlers then dominated Bangladesh, with Jess Kerr (3/21) and Lea Tahuhu (3/22) leading the attack.

Halliday, Player of the Match, praised Devine’s guidance and composure:

“It was easy to bat with Sophie. She kept it clear and simple, which helped on a tough day.”

Devine also highlighted the return of pace spearhead Lea Tahuhu, who impressed in her 100th match with disciplined bowling.

Looking Ahead

With lessons learned from previous defeats and inspired by the unpredictable nature of World Cup cricket, Devine remains confident that New Zealand’s campaign is far from over.

“We can build momentum from this win and stay competitive throughout the tournament,” she concluded.

The White Ferns now aim to carry this confidence forward, hoping for consistent performances as they eye the later stages of the World Cup.
