Union Minister Suresh Gopi stirred controversy during a public event in Idukki, Kerala, by alleging that Kerala has been governed for years by politicians “elected by corpses.” The remarks came amid ongoing debates over voter list irregularities and his own electoral win in Thrissur.
Gopi’s remarks indirectly referenced the Thrissur voter list controversy, where both the Congress and Left parties accused the BJP of voter manipulation. He claimed that deceased individuals were included as active voters in the state’s electoral rolls.
“Those who made corpses vote to win are the ones who are ruling Kerala for this long. The corpses who were buried 25 years ago were made to vote. You all have reported it,” Gopi stated.
Addressing his own win, Gopi highlighted the significance of Thrissur as a constituency where the BJP historically struggles to gain influence.
“I was able to win from Thrissur, where BJP will not be able to have that kind of influence even in future. I believe it was because God was with me,” he said, appearing emotional during the interaction.
The Union Minister also urged for a shift in Kerala’s political landscape, suggesting that even if the BJP does not come to power this term, a new political force should emerge to safeguard public interest.
“At least this time, or even if we don’t come to power this time, there should be the rise of a new force in the political and power structure by having a strong presence in the assembly. This is to safeguard people,” he added.
Suresh Gopi’s comments have reignited debates on voter roll integrity in Kerala and sparked political backlash. His statements underscore the BJP’s ambition to expand its influence in a state historically dominated by the Left and Congress parties.
