Tamil Nadu Increases UG Admission Age Limit to 40 from 2025-26

The Tamil Nadu government has revised the upper age limit for undergraduate admissions in arts and science colleges, allowing candidates up to 40 years of age to apply from the 2025-26 academic year. The order applies to government, government-aided, and self-financing institutions across the state.

According to the Higher Education Department, additional relaxations will benefit specific groups. Persons with disabilities will receive a five-year extension, raising their eligibility to 45 years, while students from reserved categories (SC, SCA, ST, BC, BCM, MBC, and DNC) will have a three-year relaxation, making them eligible up to 43 years.

Previous Age Limit and Policy Change

Until now, the maximum age limit for undergraduate admissions was 21 years, with relaxations of five years for persons with disabilities and three years for reserved categories. Educational experts and social groups had long argued that the restrictive age cap prevented many aspiring learners from pursuing higher education later in life.

Expanding Access to Higher Education

The new policy aims to create inclusive opportunities for students who may have missed out earlier due to personal, social, or financial challenges. By extending the age limit, the government seeks to encourage lifelong learning and ensure that higher education remains accessible to all sections of society.

The decision reflects Tamil Nadu’s commitment to building an inclusive education framework, opening doors for those wishing to restart or continue their academic journey at a later stage in life.
