Three Dead as Indonesian Protesters Torch Parliament Building After Taxi Driver’s Death

At least three people were killed and five others injured in Indonesia after protesters set fire to a regional parliament building in Makassar, the capital of South Sulawesi province, officials said on Saturday. The unrest, which marks the first major challenge for President Prabowo Subianto’s administration, erupted following the death of a ride-hailing motorbike driver struck by a police armoured vehicle.

The country’s disaster management agency confirmed the fatalities but did not specify the causes of death. Local news agency Antara reported that the victims were likely trapped inside the burning building. Officials added that two of the injured sustained injuries after jumping from the structure to escape the flames.

Protests initially began earlier this week in Jakarta over lawmakers’ salaries but escalated dramatically on Friday after the driver was killed in the capital. The incident sparked widespread outrage, fueling demonstrations across several cities, including Bandung and Yogyakarta.

President Prabowo visited the victim’s family late Friday, offering condolences and pledging a thorough investigation into the circumstances of his death.

Meanwhile, reports emerged of isolated looting and damage to transport infrastructure in Jakarta. The city’s mass rapid transit service said trains were bypassing one station near the protest site, while the state-run Transjakarta bus network also reported service disruptions.

As of Saturday morning, there were no immediate signs of further demonstrations. Authorities have not disclosed whether additional security measures will be implemented.
