Virat Kohli Rohit Sharma ODI Challenge Australia

Virat Kohli Rohit Sharma ODI Challenge Australia

As India prepares for the upcoming ODI series against Australia, former Australian all-rounder Shane Watson believes that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will face one of their sternest challenges in international cricket. Returning after months away, the Indian duo must quickly rediscover their rhythm to dominate once again.

Both Rohit and Kohli, who have retired from T20Is and Tests, are set to feature in India’s first ODI assignment since their Champions Trophy victory earlier this year. The three-match series, starting October 19, marks their comeback after nearly eight months away from the format.

Watson’s Take on the Challenge

“It’s never easy to hit the ground running after such a long gap, especially against a team like Australia, who have some of the best bowlers in world cricket. It might take them some time to rediscover their rhythm and preparation routines. But with their quality and consistency, I don’t think it’ll take long before they’re back at their best,” Watson said.

Australia will field world-class bowlers, including Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc, making the challenge even tougher. For both Kohli and Rohit, maintaining dominance after focusing solely on ODIs will require adaptation.

A Possible Farewell Tour?

With Shubman Gill appointed as India’s new ODI captain, Rohit will return as a specialist batter alongside Kohli. Watson speculates that this series could be their final tour of Australia, and fans on both sides will cherish the opportunity to witness their brilliance.

“Virat has always been one of Australia’s fiercest competitors, and Rohit a respected leader and performer. Australians appreciate quality, and these two epitomise that,” Watson added.

Form, Fitness, and Legacy

During their hiatus, both veterans focused on fitness and preparation for the long season ahead. India has been undefeated in ODIs in 2025, but the upcoming series against Australia will test even the most seasoned batters.

For Kohli and Rohit, this isn’t just about milestones or stats — it’s about reaffirming their legacy against one of the best bowling line-ups in world cricket and inspiring millions ahead of the 2027 World Cup.
