NOAA Plane Flies Inside Category 5 Hurricane Polo, Captures Eye-Wall Footage

NOAA has captured a dramatic view from inside Hurricane Polo after its WP-3D Orion aircraft flew through the storm’s eyewall and into its eye on September 22. The footage showed the aircraft passing through dense clouds before reaching the eye, where towering clouds surrounded a clearer patch of sky.

The specialised hurricane-hunting aircraft, including NOAA’s WP-3D Orion known as “Miss Piggy,” carries instruments that measure wind speed, air pressure, temperature and humidity. It also releases dropsondes to collect atmospheric data as they fall through the storm. These measurements help improve hurricane analysis and forecasting.

Polo reached Category 5 strength, with maximum sustained winds of around 260 kmph reported on September 24. Aircraft observations later recorded winds close to 240 kmph as the hurricane underwent changes in its eyewall structure.

The storm was also photographed from the International Space Station by NASA astronaut Jessica Meir, offering a view of its clearly defined eye from hundreds of kilometres above Earth.

Polo was later reported as a Category 4 hurricane moving westward southwest of Manzanillo, Mexico. The storm brought heavy rain to parts of southwestern Mexico, increasing the risk of flooding and mudslides.
