Tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan have sharply escalated, with Islamabad launching a military offensive named “Operation Ghazib Lil-Haq” and officially declaring that the country is now in an “open war” situation.
The announcement came after the Taliban administration in Afghanistan claimed that its forces had seized 19 Pakistani checkposts and killed 55 Pakistani soldiers in what it described as large-scale airstrikes. The claims triggered a swift and forceful response from Islamabad.
According to Pakistani officials, the military has targeted several installations inside Afghanistan, including locations in Kabul, Paktia, and Kandahar. The operation was launched after days of mounting border tensions and cross-border clashes.
Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif stated that the country is in an “open war” with Afghanistan, signaling a major shift in the scale of the confrontation.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also addressed the situation, asserting that Pakistan’s armed forces are fully prepared to defend the country’s sovereignty. He said there would be “no compromise” on national defence and that any aggression would be met with a strong response.
Amid the rising hostilities, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar reportedly held discussions with Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan Al-Saud. The diplomatic outreach indicates that regional players may become involved in efforts to contain the crisis.
So far, there has been no formal confirmation from Saudi Arabia regarding mediation efforts, but the phone call suggests that Islamabad is seeking diplomatic engagement alongside military action.
The Taliban administration claimed that it had shot down a Pakistani aircraft during the confrontation. However, independent verification of this claim has not yet emerged.
Meanwhile, a video circulating on social media purportedly showing an Afghan strike on a Pakistani F-16 fighter jet was later flagged by users as an old clip that had been digitally altered using artificial intelligence. Authorities have urged caution against spreading unverified content during the ongoing conflict.
The situation marks one of the most serious escalations between the two neighboring countries in recent years. The Pakistan-Afghanistan border has long been a hotspot for tensions, but the declaration of an “open war” significantly raises the stakes.
With military operations underway and diplomatic channels active, the coming days will be crucial in determining whether the conflict intensifies further or shifts toward negotiation.
