Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Canada on December 11 and 12, 2026, for talks with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, as both countries seek to turn improving relations into concrete outcomes. The PM Modi Canada visit is expected to focus on trade, energy, technology, security and people-to-people ties.
The Indian High Commission in Ottawa announced the dates following a conversation between the two leaders. Carney also confirmed the planned visit while speaking to visitors at a restaurant in Calgary, saying Modi would travel to Toronto and Ottawa. He added that the itinerary could potentially be expanded.
India-Canada Relations Gain Momentum
The upcoming visit follows recent diplomatic engagement aimed at strengthening the bilateral relationship. Modi previously described his conversation with Carney as “warm and productive”, with both leaders agreeing to build on the positive momentum in ties.
In a post on X, Modi said the two countries would work towards concrete outcomes across key areas of their strategic partnership. These include trade, energy, technology, security and closer people-to-people connections.
The discussions are expected to provide an opportunity for both governments to identify practical areas of cooperation and advance their shared priorities.
Trade Agreement Remains a Key Priority
A major focus of the diplomatic engagement is the proposed Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). According to a statement from Carney’s office, the leaders reaffirmed their commitment to concluding negotiations at the earliest opportunity.
The agreement is intended to support efforts to double bilateral trade by 2030. Progress on the negotiations could provide a framework for expanding commercial engagement and strengthening economic links between the two countries.
Trade, energy and technology are expected to feature prominently as India and Canada work to translate diplomatic progress into measurable economic outcomes.
Security and Strategic Cooperation
Beyond trade, the visit is expected to cover security cooperation and broader strategic priorities. People-to-people ties will also remain part of the agenda, reflecting the importance of connections between the two countries.
The December 11–12 visit to Toronto and Ottawa will offer both governments an opportunity to assess progress and establish priorities for the next phase of their partnership.
