Rajkumar Santoshi Rejects Shabana Azmi’s Theory on Batwara 1947’s Box Office Failure

Filmmaker Rajkumar Santoshi has rejected actor Shabana Azmi’s suggestion that Batwara 1947 may have struggled at the box office because audiences found it difficult to accept Sunny Deol playing a Muslim character.

Santoshi argued that such casting has been accepted before in mainstream Hindi cinema, pointing to Amitabh Bachchan’s Muslim characters in films such as Coolie. However, he acknowledged that attitudes towards religion and identity may have changed over time.

SANTOSHI REJECTS THE CASTING THEORY

Speaking to Variety India, Santoshi questioned whether Sunny Deol’s portrayal of a Muslim character could really explain the film’s poor theatrical performance.

He cited Amitabh Bachchan’s role in Coolie and other films featuring Muslim protagonists, arguing that audiences have historically accepted actors portraying characters from different religious communities.

At the same time, Santoshi acknowledged that society may have become less tolerant and inclusive compared with earlier decades. He said filmmakers should focus on the intent behind a story rather than judging a character solely by the actor’s religious identity.

WHAT SHABANA AZMI SAID

Azmi had earlier expressed surprise at the film’s poor box office performance despite receiving positive feedback from people who watched it.

She suggested that some viewers may have struggled to accept Sunny Deol as a Muslim character and misunderstood his role as being Pakistani.

Azmi compared the reaction with Amitabh Bachchan’s Muslim characters in Coolie and Deewaar, saying such portrayals were previously accepted by audiences.

She also argued that the film’s message about humanity was particularly relevant in the current environment.

SANTOSHI ON RELIGION AND INCLUSIVITY

Santoshi said his own Hindu identity does not prevent him from respecting other faiths. He argued that religion should be viewed through the principles of equality and inclusiveness rather than exclusion.

His comments have added another perspective to the debate surrounding Batwara 1947—whether its weak box office was primarily a result of audience confusion, changing social attitudes, the film’s subject matter, or other factors.

Batwara 1947 stars Sunny Deol alongside Preity Zinta, Karan Deol, Ali Fazal, Abhimanyu Singh, Khushi Hajare and Kanikka Kapur.

The film reportedly carries a budget of around Rs 150 crore and has earned approximately Rs 54.03 crore gross worldwide, according to industry tracker Sacnilk.
