The Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli 2027 ODI World Cup selection debate has gained fresh attention after BCCI president Mithun Manhas said age would not determine whether the two senior batters make India's squad. Instead, fitness, form and match-winning performances will remain the key criteria as India prepare for the tournament.
In an interview with Sportstar, Manhas said any player who remains fit, performs consistently and contributes to India's victories should be considered for selection. The 2027 ODI World Cup is scheduled to take place in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia in October and November.
Both Kohli and Rohit are hoping to feature in another ODI World Cup after being part of India's campaign in the previous edition. The pair have already retired from T20 internationals and Test cricket, leaving the 50-over format as their remaining international format.
How Old Will Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli Be in 2027?
Rohit Sharma will turn 40 in April 2027, while Virat Kohli will be 38 during the tournament. Their ages have prompted discussions among fans and former cricketers about India's long-term transition plans.
The transition has already begun in other formats. Rohit, Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja retired from T20 internationals following India's 2024 T20 World Cup triumph. Rohit and Kohli subsequently retired from Test cricket in 2025.
Despite questions about their future, their ODI performances will remain central to the selection discussion. Rohit's century at Lord's helped ease some concerns about his form, while Kohli has continued to produce strong numbers in the format.
Senior Players Could Help Shubman Gill Lead India
Manhas also highlighted how experienced players could support Shubman Gill if he leads India at the 2027 World Cup. He pointed to the value of having senior figures such as Rohit, Kohli, Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah within the squad.
According to Manhas, distributing leadership responsibilities across batting, bowling and fielding could help manage the workload and strengthen the team. He also described Gill as level-headed, suggesting that his captaincy experience with Gujarat Titans could prove valuable.
India's multi-format tour of New Zealand begins on October 22 and includes five T20Is, five ODIs and two Tests. The ODI series, scheduled from November 4 to 15, will provide another opportunity to assess Rohit and Kohli as preparations for the 2027 World Cup continue.
