Sadhguru Calls for Five-Nation Himalayan Board After Nepal Flash Floods

Sadhguru Jagadish Vasudev has called for the creation of a five-nation Himalayan Board involving India, China, Pakistan, Nepal and Bhutan, arguing that the fragile Himalayan region requires greater cooperation beyond political boundaries.

Speaking at an “In Solidarity With Nepal” event in Kathmandu, Sadhguru said the Himalayan ecosystem is shared by multiple countries and that disaster management in the region cannot be handled through political boundaries alone.

“The mountains don't know your political affiliation,” Sadhguru said, stressing the need for countries to work together to protect the Himalayan region.

Sadhguru calls for Himalayan cooperation

Sadhguru described the Himalayas as one of the planet’s most majestic yet fragile geographical systems. He argued that a dedicated body involving all countries through which the Himalayan ranges run should be established urgently.

He said the scale of the recent disaster was beyond what Nepal could reasonably be expected to manage alone and called for international cooperation in dealing with its aftermath.

“Nobody expected something like this to happen,” he said, adding that the disaster demonstrated the need to rethink regional preparedness.

Nepal flash floods leave hundreds dead

Sadhguru’s remarks came after devastating flash floods near the China-Nepal border caused widespread destruction and left hundreds dead and thousands missing.

According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, the death toll had risen to 903. A group of 77 pilgrims associated with the Isha Foundation and three volunteers stationed on the Nepal side were also reportedly unaccounted for.

The Isha Foundation conducts Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage programmes in the region, with groups travelling through Nepal towards Tibet.

Rs 1 crore relief donation

Sadhguru also pledged Rs 1 crore to Nepal’s Prime Minister Disaster Relief Fund as part of relief efforts following the disaster.

The Kathmandu gathering brought together people expressing solidarity with those affected by the floods. Alongside immediate relief measures, the event highlighted the need for stronger cross-border cooperation to address disaster risks in the Himalayan region.

Sadhguru’s proposed Himalayan Board would bring together India, China, Pakistan, Nepal and Bhutan, with the broader objective of coordinating efforts related to the shared Himalayan environment and future disasters.
