Santner backs Daryl Mitchell to replicate ODI heroics in India T20I series

Mitchell Santner, the captain of New Zealand cricket team, has expressed strong confidence that senior batter Daryl Mitchell will replicate his outstanding ODI form in the upcoming five-match T20I series against India national cricket team, beginning in Nagpur on Wednesday.

Mitchell was the standout performer of the recently concluded ODI series, where New Zealand scripted a historic 2–1 series victory on Indian soil for the first time. The right-hander produced a string of commanding innings—84, 131* and 137—cementing his reputation as one of the most dependable overseas batters against India.

Speaking ahead of the T20I opener, Santner highlighted Mitchell’s growth, particularly against spin, as a key reason for his success. He noted that the batter had worked tirelessly to improve his spin game and now controls the middle overs with remarkable composure. Santner believes those qualities can translate effectively into the shortest format as well.

Confidence high after historic ODI win

New Zealand enter the T20I series riding high on confidence after their landmark ODI success against a strong Indian side featuring senior stars. The win followed the Black Caps’ memorable Test series triumph in India in 2024, further strengthening belief within the squad.

Santner said the recent run of results across formats has given New Zealand a psychological edge. He added that the team enjoys playing in India and relishes the challenge of competing against one of the strongest sides in world cricket on their home turf.

Eye on T20 World Cup 2026

While winning the series remains a priority, Santner underlined the broader objective of preparing for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup, scheduled to be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka next month. Facing India in similar conditions is seen as ideal preparation ahead of the global event.

Mitchell’s proven ability to counter quality spin and manage tempo under pressure makes him central to New Zealand’s plans, especially against India’s spin-heavy bowling attack. With form, confidence and experience on his side, the Black Caps skipper is hopeful that Mitchell can once again be the difference-maker as the rivalry shifts to the T20I format.
