Sona Mohapatra has called out alleged online abuse after criticising Rahul Gandhi over Himachal Pradesh’s condition.

Singer Sona Mohapatra has called out online abuse after urging Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to focus on Himachal Pradesh’s governance. The singer shared screenshots of abusive comments on social media, questioning why her criticism had triggered such a hostile response.

In her post, Sona tagged an account she said had repeatedly shared abusive messages and suggested that the backlash was connected to her remarks about the Congress leader. She also contrasted the response with the reaction to her criticism of indiscriminate mining in Odisha’s hills, which she said had attracted considerably less hostility.

Her comments have reignited discussion about political disagreements, online harassment and the responses public figures face when they criticise political parties.

What Did Sona Mohapatra Say About Rahul Gandhi?

Sona’s remarks followed Rahul Gandhi’s comments about repairing democracy. In response, she urged him to address the condition of Himachal Pradesh, a state governed by the Congress party.

In a post on X, the singer said she was shocked by the condition of the state’s hills and rivers after returning following nine years. She referred to garbage-strewn hills and polluted rivers and challenged the Congress leadership to demonstrate effective governance in the state.

Sona argued that Himachal Pradesh should become an example of good administration rather than allowing political leaders to focus exclusively on national-level criticism.

Her post prompted mixed reactions online. While some users supported her demand for accountability from Congress-ruled states, others criticised her remarks and political stance.

Why Did Sona Mohapatra Call Out Online Abuse?

In her latest post, Sona shared a screenshot of comments she described as part of an “avalanche” of political abuse she had received since raising the issue.

She questioned whether the hostility was linked to perceptions of her political views, asking whether criticism of a political leader could lead to such a response.

The singer also highlighted the contrast with her earlier comments about indiscriminate mining in Odisha’s hills, saying that the post had not attracted comparable levels of abuse.

Her remarks drew attention to the challenges public figures can face when commenting on politically sensitive issues. However, the identity and political affiliation of every account involved in the alleged abuse have not been independently established.

Rahul Gandhi’s Remarks on Democracy

Rahul Gandhi had said that the departure of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the current government would pave the way for repairing democracy. He shared a video of his address to INDIA bloc MPs in Parliament’s Central Hall.

Sona’s criticism challenged the Congress leader to demonstrate the governance standards he advocates at the national level within a state governed by his party.

Separately, Rahul Gandhi on October 14 accused Delhi Police of assaulting Youth Congress workers detained during protests over alleged electoral-roll irregularities. He claimed that Delhi University student Athira, who is from Kerala, had lost hearing in one ear following an alleged assault. The claim was an allegation made by Gandhi.

The contrasting political exchanges underline how debates over governance, electoral reform and accountability increasingly extend to social media, where criticism can quickly become contentious.
