Tim Southee Picks Mohammed Siraj Over Jasprit Bumrah as India’s Key Threat in New Zealand Tests

Former New Zealand pacer Tim Southee believes Mohammed Siraj could trouble the Black Caps more than Jasprit Bumrah in the upcoming two-Test series.

Tim Southee believes Mohammed Siraj’s energy and bowling style could make him a major threat to New Zealand in Test cricket.

Mohammed Siraj could emerge as India’s biggest bowling threat in the upcoming Test series against New Zealand, according to former New Zealand fast bowler Tim Southee. While Jasprit Bumrah remains one of India’s leading pace options, Southee believes New Zealand’s batters have handled him effectively in Test cricket and could face a different challenge from Siraj.

Speaking during a virtual interaction facilitated by Sony Sports Network, Southee pointed to Bumrah’s record against New Zealand and praised Siraj’s energy, work ethic and bowling style.

Why Southee Backs Siraj Over Bumrah

Bumrah has taken nine wickets in five Tests against New Zealand, with a bowling strike rate of 92.8. This is considerably higher than his overall Test career strike rate of 42.80.

Southee also noted that India had lost all five Tests against New Zealand in which Bumrah featured, arguing that the hosts had managed to counter the Indian fast bowler effectively in the format.

“I think New Zealand have played Bumrah incredibly well in Test cricket,” Southee said, adding that New Zealand had played him exceptionally well in Tests.

However, his assessment was not a dismissal of Bumrah’s ability. Instead, it highlighted the importance of match-ups and New Zealand’s experience against the Indian pacer.

Siraj’s Energy Could Make a Difference

Southee expressed particular admiration for Siraj and believes the Indian fast bowler could succeed in New Zealand if he consistently hits the right lengths.

Since making his Test debut during the 2020-21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, Siraj has taken 144 wickets in 48 matches, according to the figures cited in the report.

“I’m a big fan of Mohammed Siraj and the way he bowls. If he can get his length right in New Zealand, he could be a handful,” Southee said.

He also praised Siraj’s ability to maintain intensity throughout long spells, suggesting that his approach could prove valuable in conditions that reward disciplined fast bowling.

India Prepare for Two-Test Challenge

India’s two-match Test series against New Zealand is scheduled to begin on November 19 at the Basin Reserve in Wellington. The second Test is scheduled for Christchurch from November 27.

India will be looking to respond after losing their previous Test series in New Zealand 2-0 in February 2020. New Zealand won the Wellington Test by 10 wickets before securing a seven-wicket victory in Christchurch.

With Siraj’s consistency and Bumrah’s experience both potentially important, India’s pace attack will face a significant test against a New Zealand side familiar with home conditions.
