Umar Khalid Seeks Interim Bail to Attend Sister’s Wedding in Delhi Riots Case

Jailed activist Umar Khalid, an accused in the alleged larger conspiracy behind the 2020 Northeast Delhi riots, has sought interim bail to attend his sister’s wedding later this month. His plea places the spotlight once again on the prolonged pre-trial detention of several UAPA-accused individuals and the personal hardships faced during extended incarceration.

Khalid has requested interim bail from December 14 to December 29, stating in his application that his sister’s wedding is scheduled for December 27 and that his presence is vital for the ceremonies and family functions leading up to the event.

The application was submitted before the special UAPA court at Karkardooma, which is handling cases linked to the alleged conspiracy behind the Delhi riots. The court has listed the matter for December 11, when arguments from both the defence and the prosecution will be heard.

Umar Khalid has been in judicial custody since September 2020. He has consistently denied the allegations levelled against him and has approached various courts seeking regular bail, all of which have been rejected so far.

A decision on his latest request for interim relief is expected after the December 11 hearing.
