US, Russia Set for Miami Talks as Diplomatic Push to End Ukraine War Gains Pace

The United States and Russia are preparing for high-level diplomatic talks in Miami, opening a fresh channel of engagement as Washington attempts to break the stalemate in the ongoing Ukraine war, according to a report by Politico.

The discussions, expected to take place this weekend, come as the US simultaneously holds consultations with Ukraine and European allies over potential security guarantees, territorial arrangements and conditions for a possible ceasefire. While plans are still evolving, the Miami meeting signals a renewed diplomatic push amid intensifying geopolitical pressure.

According to the report, the Russian delegation will be led by Kirill Dmitriev, head of Russia’s sovereign wealth fund. The US side is expected to include Steve Witkoff, special envoy of the Trump administration, and Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump’s son-in-law.

Background to the Miami Talks

Earlier this week, Witkoff and Kushner held extended discussions in Berlin with Ukrainian and European officials. Those talks focused on potential US-backed security assurances for Kyiv, possible territorial compromises and broader parameters for ending the conflict. Washington has reportedly urged Ukraine to adopt a more flexible negotiating position.

As part of the evolving US approach, officials have floated the idea of offering Ukraine a mutual defence commitment similar to NATO guarantees, though without formal alliance membership. In return, Kyiv has reportedly softened its long-standing demand for immediate NATO entry — a key red line for Moscow.

Putin Signals No Shift in War Objectives

Despite renewed diplomatic activity, Russian President Vladimir Putin showed little indication of backing down from his military objectives. Speaking to senior defence officials in Moscow, Putin said Russia would not abandon its mission to reclaim what he described as its “historic lands.”

He warned that if negotiations fail, Moscow would continue pursuing its goals through military means. Putin also used harsh rhetoric against European leaders supporting Ukraine, raising doubts among analysts about Russia’s willingness to engage meaningfully in peace talks.

Parallel Diplomatic Tracks

US officials have indicated that a separate meeting involving military representatives from Ukraine’s partner countries is also being planned in the United States. That forum is expected to address technical aspects of security arrangements, ceasefire monitoring and territorial stabilisation.

European governments, meanwhile, have been holding intensive consultations over the past two weeks on proposals that include a demilitarised buffer zone, troop deployments for training Ukrainian forces, and mechanisms to oversee any future ceasefire.

The Miami talks with Russia appear to be part of a parallel diplomatic track, underscoring Washington’s attempt to engage all sides as it seeks momentum toward a negotiated settlement.
