Vedanta Group Chairman Anil Agarwal has reaffirmed his long-standing commitment to give away more than 75 per cent of his wealth to society, saying the resolve has only strengthened following the sudden death of his son, Agnivesh, in the United States.
Describing the loss as the darkest moment of his life, Agarwal said his 49-year-old son passed away after suffering a sudden cardiac arrest while recovering from injuries sustained in a skiing accident. Agnivesh was undergoing treatment at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, and the family had believed that his condition was improving.
In an emotional message, Agarwal said the tragedy has deeply shaken the family. He spoke of the pain of losing a child, calling it a loss that defies the natural order of life. Despite the grief, he said the values and vision he shared with his son would continue to guide his actions.
Born in Patna in 1976, Agnivesh grew up in a middle-class family and built a distinguished professional career. Educated at Mayo College, he went on to establish Fujeirah Gold, a successful enterprise in the metals sector, and later served as chairman of Hindustan Zinc. Agarwal noted that his son combined professional excellence with personal humility and was respected as a leader and colleague.
According to Agarwal, Agnivesh remained grounded despite his accomplishments and was known for his warmth, discipline, and commitment to teamwork. Beyond business, he was deeply interested in sports and music and was admired for his ability to connect with people across levels.
The Vedanta founder said the loss has reinforced his commitment to philanthropy, a goal he and his son had discussed at length. He reiterated his promise that more than three-fourths of his earnings would be channelled back into society, focusing on long-term social development.
Agarwal outlined a vision centred on eliminating hunger, expanding access to education, empowering women economically, and creating meaningful employment opportunities for India’s youth. He said his son strongly believed in India’s potential and often spoke about self-reliance and national confidence, questioning why the country should ever see itself as lacking.
In the wake of the tragedy, Agarwal said he plans to live an even simpler life and devote himself more deeply to social causes. He added that the Vedanta workforce, comprising thousands of young professionals across the country, has become a source of strength for his family during this difficult period.
Reflecting on his son’s legacy, Agarwal said that while there was much life left to be lived, Agnivesh’s values and ideals would endure through the work he inspired and the people he influenced. He expressed hope that carrying forward that vision would give meaning to his own journey ahead.
