Ajit Doval Meets Chinese Vice President in Beijing, Holds Key Talks on India-China Border Peace

National Security Advisor Ajit Doval met Chinese Vice President Han Zheng in Beijing on Tuesday, discussing ways to strengthen peace and tranquillity along the India-China border and further improve bilateral relations.

Doval is on a two-day visit to China for the Special Representatives' talks on the boundary question with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. The discussions come at a significant time for India-China relations, with both countries seeking to maintain stability along the border while exploring broader engagement in economic, political and multilateral areas.

According to the Indian Embassy, Doval and Han Zheng discussed measures to preserve peace in the border regions and improve bilateral cooperation in line with the consensus reached between the leadership of the two countries. The meeting also focused on strengthening ties across multiple areas of mutual interest.

The Special Representatives' talks between Doval and Wang Yi are expected to address the long-standing boundary dispute as well as wider regional and international developments. The mechanism, established in 2003, remains the main channel for negotiations between India and China on the boundary issue.

Relations between New Delhi and Beijing came under severe strain following the Galwan Valley clash in 2020 and the prolonged military stand-off in eastern Ladakh. Although the boundary dispute remains unresolved, both sides have taken steps in recent years to stabilise relations and reduce tensions along the Line of Actual Control.

The latest round of talks also comes ahead of the BRICS summit scheduled to be held in New Delhi on September 12 and 13, where Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to visit India. A potential meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Xi Jinping could further shape the trajectory of India-China relations.

Chinese officials have described the Special Representatives' mechanism as an important platform for communication on the boundary question and other matters of mutual concern. During the current discussions, both sides are expected to exchange views on maintaining peace along the border, improving bilateral ties and addressing regional and international issues.

Doval's Beijing visit underscores renewed diplomatic engagement between India and China, with border stability remaining central to efforts aimed at gradually rebuilding trust between the two Asian powers.
