PM Modi to Meet Putin, Xi Jinping and Pezeshkian at Delhi BRICS Summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to hold a series of important bilateral meetings with global leaders as New Delhi hosts the 18th BRICS Summit at Bharat Mandapam. Among the key leaders he is scheduled to meet are Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. Modi is also expected to hold discussions with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres.

The summit is expected to focus on strengthening the voice of the Global South and pursuing reforms in international institutions. India’s role in BRICS comes at a time of significant geopolitical and economic shifts, making the meetings with major global powers particularly important.

The bilateral engagement with China is expected to cover economic relations, including concerns surrounding the trade deficit between the two countries. India is also likely to seek improved market access for sectors such as pharmaceuticals, agriculture and engineering goods, along with greater cooperation in technology.

Xi Jinping is attending the summit with a large Chinese delegation that includes around 400 business representatives. Their presence is expected to add an economic dimension to the India-China discussions, particularly around trade and business opportunities.

India is simultaneously managing economic concerns in its relationship with Russia, including issues linked to bilateral trade. Despite these challenges, New Delhi continues to maintain diplomatic engagement with Moscow across a range of strategic areas.

The meetings with Putin, Xi and Pezeshkian are expected to give India an opportunity to discuss bilateral relations as well as wider international developments. Modi’s engagement with Guterres is also likely to focus on global governance and the need for reforms in international institutions.

With New Delhi hosting the 18th BRICS Summit, India is seeking to use the platform to highlight the priorities of the Global South while maintaining dialogue with major powers on trade, economic cooperation and geopolitical challenges.
