A 32-year-old delivery executive allegedly attempted self-immolation inside a police station in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, after his motorcycle was seized following a road accident. The incident has triggered an official inquiry, with police stating that procedures were being followed in accordance with the law.
The man, identified as Akshay Kashyap, sustained burn injuries to his upper body and was immediately rushed to a hospital. Officials confirmed that his condition is now stable and out of danger.
According to Kashyap, his motorcycle was seized after another individual allegedly attempted to flee with it and subsequently crashed into a car. He claimed that he was wrongfully implicated in an FIR related to the accident.
Kashyap further alleged that despite repeated visits to the police station and even after the alleged withdrawal of the case, his motorcycle was not released. He stated that the continued seizure of his vehicle severely affected his livelihood, as he depends on it for his work as a delivery executive.
Distressed over the situation, he reportedly set himself on fire inside the police station premises.
Police officials have offered a different account of the incident. According to the Additional Superintendent of Police (City), Manush Pareek, the motorcycle was involved in an accident after being handed over to a friend of Kashyap.
The officer said that the vehicle was impounded following the road mishap and that standard legal procedures were underway. Kashyap was reportedly informed by the Station House Officer (SHO) that the motorcycle would be released after proper document verification.
However, officials said that Kashyap became upset during the interaction and attempted self-immolation inside the police station.
Following the incident, authorities have ordered an internal inquiry to examine the circumstances surrounding the seizure of the vehicle and the events leading up to the self-immolation attempt.
Police have stated that action will be taken against any personnel found guilty of procedural lapses or misconduct.
The incident has raised concerns about grievance redressal mechanisms and the handling of disputes related to vehicle seizures. Authorities are expected to review the case in detail as part of the ongoing investigation.
