After an underwhelming run in 2025, Bollywood is once again turning to patriotism as a potential box-office revival strategy. War dramas and nationalistic stories, once considered reliable crowd-pullers, struggled to connect with audiences last year despite familiar themes of bravery and sacrifice. Yet, the film industry appears far from ready to abandon the genre. Instead, 2026 is shaping up to be a decisive year, with filmmakers banking on scale, star power and fresh storytelling to bring patriotic cinema back into favour.
The year began with Ikkis, released on January 1. Based on the life of Param Vir Chakra awardee Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal, the film narrates the story of a 21-year-old soldier who died fighting in the 1971 Indo-Pak war. Directed by Sriram Raghavan, the film focuses on an emotionally inspiring real-life story rather than spectacle. It also marks the final screen appearance of Dharmendra and features Jaideep Ahlawat, while introducing Agastya Nanda in his first theatrical release.
Later this month, attention shifts to Border 2, slated for release on January 23. Positioned as a spiritual sequel to the iconic 1997 war film, the project is mounted on a much grander scale and features a star-studded cast including Sunny Deol, Varun Dhawan, Ahan Shetty and Diljit Dosanjh. Trade observers believe nostalgia, franchise value and music could help the film secure a strong opening, making it one of the biggest theatrical bets of the year.
The renewed push follows a disappointing 2025, when films such as Sky Force, Sarzameen and 120 Bahadur failed to leave a mark. The only partial exception was Kesari Chapter 2, which managed moderate box-office returns. Industry feedback suggests the issue was not patriotism itself but predictable narratives, limited scale and the absence of mass-appeal stars.
Later in 2026, expectations are high for The Battle of Galwan, headlined by Salman Khan and based on the 2020 Galwan Valley clash. Directed by Apoorva Lakhia, the film emphasises realism and hand-to-hand combat over visual effects, which analysts believe could reconnect audiences with grounded action storytelling.
Beyond cinemas, the OTT space is also embracing patriotic and historical narratives. The Revolutionaries, streaming on Prime Video, explores the lives of young freedom fighters and features Bhuvan Bam and Rohit Saraf. Meanwhile, Freedom at Midnight returns with its second season on SonyLiv, focusing on the political turmoil surrounding India’s Partition.
Whether this renewed focus on patriotism will translate into box-office success remains uncertain. What is clear, however, is that Bollywood continues to believe that stories of national identity, sacrifice and history still hold the power to resonate—provided they are told with scale, sincerity and strong storytelling.
