The signing of Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman by Kolkata Knight Riders ahead of IPL 2026 has sparked a political and social controversy, drawing reactions from former cricketers, politicians and religious groups. Amid the growing debate, former India international Mohammad Kaif has urged patience, expressing confidence that the Board of Control for Cricket in India will take an appropriate and balanced decision.
The controversy erupted after Kolkata Knight Riders, co-owned by Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan, secured Mustafizur Rahman for Rs 9.20 crore during the IPL 2026 mini-auction. The left-arm pacer was the only Bangladeshi player to be picked from a list of seven shortlisted players, following a competitive bidding war with Chennai Super Kings.
The move has faced criticism from sections of the political spectrum, particularly leaders associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party, as well as some religious groups. Their objections stem from concerns over reported incidents of violence against Hindus in Bangladesh, with critics questioning the timing and optics of including a Bangladeshi player in a Kolkata-based franchise.
Speaking to reporters during the ILT20 event in Dubai, Kaif said he was not fully aware of the developments due to his recent travel but emphasised that the matter should be left to the cricket board. He advised against speculation and urged the media and public to wait for an official decision. Kaif described the BCCI administration as experienced and capable, pointing out that it manages the world’s biggest cricket league and understands the implications of its decisions.
Political reactions have intensified the debate. BJP leader Kaustav Bagchi issued a public warning regarding the participation of Bangladeshi players in IPL matches scheduled to be held in Kolkata. Some Hindu religious leaders and BJP figures went a step further, criticising Shah Rukh Khan and questioning his association with the franchise. In contrast, leaders from the Indian National Congress have publicly supported the actor and defended the franchise’s decision, calling for sports to be kept separate from political tensions.
The controversy has also revived memories of earlier decisions taken by the BCCI, including the postponement of an India–Bangladesh bilateral series in 2025 amid public backlash. However, no official statement has yet been issued by the cricket board regarding the Mustafizur Rahman signing.
With IPL 2026 scheduled to begin in March, all eyes are now on the BCCI’s response. The episode has once again highlighted the complex intersection of sport, politics and public sentiment in Indian cricket, raising questions about how franchises and governing bodies navigate geopolitical sensitivities in a global league like the IPL.
