Confident Group Chairman CJ Roy Found Dead in Bengaluru After Income Tax Raids

CJ Roy, founder and chairman of real estate major Confident Group, was found dead at his office premises in Bengaluru on Thursday evening, hours after Income Tax officials conducted searches at the company’s offices. Police suspect the case to be one of suicide, though investigations are ongoing.

According to preliminary information shared by the police, Roy sustained a fatal gunshot wound from his licensed firearm. The incident occurred inside his office, where a gunshot was reportedly heard by staff members. When employees rushed to the room, they found Roy lying in a pool of blood. He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.

The incident followed Income Tax Department searches at Confident Group offices located on Richmond Road in Bengaluru. Sources indicated that the searches were part of an ongoing investigation into alleged assets disproportionate to known sources of income. Officials confirmed that the raids had been underway for the past two to three days, including similar actions conducted earlier.

Bengaluru City Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh confirmed the death and said that, based on initial findings, investigators believe Roy may have shot himself. He added that no definitive conclusion would be drawn until post-mortem and forensic examinations were completed.

Police officials stated that a case has been registered, and all procedural steps are being followed. They emphasised that while the circumstances point towards self-inflicted injury, the investigation remains open and subject to medical and forensic findings.

At the time of the incident, Roy’s immediate family members were not in India. Police said they are in constant communication with the family, who are expected to arrive in the country shortly. Authorities are also coordinating with officials from Kerala, where Confident Group is headquartered, to gather additional background information relevant to the case.

Founded by CJ Roy, Confident Group is a prominent name in South India’s real estate sector, with projects spanning residential, commercial and infrastructure development. Over the years, the company has been active across Kerala, Karnataka and other states, building a strong presence in urban housing.

The sudden death of its chairman has sent shockwaves through business and real estate circles, particularly given the timing of the incident following tax enforcement action. However, officials cautioned against drawing any links or conclusions at this stage.

Investigators will rely on post-mortem results, ballistic reports, and forensic analysis of the firearm and scene to establish the exact sequence of events. Statements from staff members present at the office and a review of CCTV footage, if available, are also expected to form part of the probe.

Police reiterated that further clarity would emerge only after all investigative processes are completed. Until then, authorities have urged restraint and accuracy in reporting, given the sensitivity of the case.
