The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has officially announced the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2027 examination schedule, introducing several major changes aimed at improving the examination process.
Apart from releasing the exam dates, the institute has unveiled a new Robotics and Automation (RA) paper, revised the syllabus across all subjects, integrated DigiLocker-based registration, introduced facial authentication, and updated eligibility criteria for candidates.
The changes are expected to modernise the examination while aligning it with emerging technologies and evolving industry requirements.
According to IIT Madras, GATE 2027 will be conducted on the following dates:
The examination will be held in two shifts each day:
IIT Madras is organising the examination in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and other IITs on behalf of the National Coordination Board (GATE), Ministry of Education.
The 2027 edition marks the 45th edition of the prestigious national-level engineering entrance examination.
The online application process is expected to begin in mid-August 2026 through the official GATE 2027 portal.
To simplify candidate verification and strengthen examination security, IIT Madras has announced two major digital initiatives:
Officials believe these measures will reduce manual verification, improve transparency, and ensure a smoother examination experience.
One of the biggest updates for GATE 2027 is the introduction of a new Robotics and Automation (RA) paper.
The new paper reflects the growing demand for professionals in robotics, automation, artificial intelligence, industrial automation, and smart manufacturing.
With this addition, GATE continues to expand its subject offerings to match technological advancements and industry requirements.
IIT Madras has also revised the syllabus for all GATE test papers for the first time in five years.
According to the institute, the updated syllabus has been designed to better reflect:
Candidates preparing for GATE 2027 are advised to carefully review the revised syllabus before beginning their preparation.
Along with the introduction of the Robotics paper, another important restructuring has been announced.
The Textile Engineering and Fibre Science (TF) paper will no longer be offered as an independent paper. Instead, it will now be available as a sectional paper under Engineering Sciences (XE).
Despite these changes, GATE 2027 will continue to offer 30 test papers, and candidates will be allowed to appear for one or two papers, subject to the combinations prescribed by the organising institute.
IIT Madras has retained the revised eligibility norms introduced in previous editions.
Candidates are eligible if they have:
Additionally, third-year BTech students are also eligible to appear for GATE 2027 under the revised eligibility criteria.
There is no minimum or maximum age limit for appearing in the examination.
GATE remains one of India's most competitive examinations for engineering and science graduates.
A valid GATE score is widely used for:
With the addition of emerging technology subjects like Robotics and enhanced digital verification, GATE 2027 reflects the evolving landscape of engineering education and recruitment.
GATE 2027 will be held on February 6, 7, 13, 14, 20, and 21, 2027, in two shifts each day.
